Wireless/mobile
networks has been identified as the best solution for remote metering
applications. They provide the most flexibility and need no previous infrastructure
in order to be installed. Also, they consume less energy and are easier
to manage, as compared to power line and fixed line communications.
The SyncSen Network provides
a mesh network (targeted at metering applications) with ultra-low power
requirements that allow the system to run for several years.
The technology chosen is
the Wireless MBUS (WMBUS) standard which is multi-hop topology compliant
with the EN-13757 standard. The WMBUS standard specifies communications
between water, gas, heat, and electric meters and is becoming widely
accepted in Europe for smart metering or Advanced Metering Infrastructure
(AMI) applications. WMBUS is targeted to operate in the 868 MHz band.
This band gives a good trade off between RF range and antenna size.
